NEW YORK — AVN has confirmed that adult industry legend Jamie Gillis succumbed today to a battle with cancer in his hometown of New York City. He was 66.

Gillis will be cremated at a private ceremony. He requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the NYC Police Athletic League, an organization that assisted him as a boy and continues to aid New York City children. Donations can be made at www.palnyc.org/800-PAL-4KIDS/donate.aspx

Vetern adult director Cass Paley (aka Wesley Emerson) said the following in an email to AVN Friday evening regarding Gillis’ death:

“It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Jamie Gillis. A wonderful and charismatic man and most treasured friend, he will be greatly missed by his partner Zarela, his family, his many friends, and countless fans around the world.

“Despite the immense grief we feel for the loss of our friend, we are comforted by a quotation from Albert Camus that Jamie often quoted to us: ‘Happniess, too, is inevitable.’”

The blog PENETRATING INSIGHTS recently posted a great retrospect of Jamie Gillis and his life, most of which I will re-post here:

Born in New York City, on April 20th 1943, Gillis trained as a professional actor and graduated from Columbia University in 1970. In the early 70s, while performing in off-Broadway shows and driving a NYC cab part-time, he answered a Village Voice ad for nude modelling, and this quickly lead to work in live sex shows and porn loops. During these live sex shows, Gillis would reportedly ensure socially redeeming content, and thereby avoid arrest, by reciting poetry or reading Shakespeare (ay, there’s the rub?).

Of the early days of shooting porn, he has said:

It was a fly-by-night thing happening in a counterculture. So on top of the sex, you had this attitude: “This is our generation doing something different than anybody else would do.” Even though it wasn’t explicitly political, in the sense that some of the rock and roll was — it was of the time, like smoking pot or dropping acid. It had that vibe: “We hang together because we have some kind of consciousness, and we’re also making some bucks and getting our rocks off.” But then you had this complete change in technology in the business, and now there’s nothing countercultural about the scene — nothing “outlaw” about it.

Though it wasn’t unusual to appear in roughies or rape porn in the Swinging Seventies, Gillis stood out by virtue of his genuine enthusiasm, his gift for verbal abuse, and his willingness to go that extra mile (even requesting an interview with the real-life Enema Bandit before shooting the notorious Waterpower). For much of the 70s, Gillis was also one-half of the most notorious couple in the adult industry with porn legend Serena (also known as the S&M couple for their usual off-camera proclivities).

Many recognize Jamie Gillis as a familiar face from classic 70s and 80s porn. He could be funny or intense, smouldering or maniacal, but he was always interesting to watch.

Others may know him as the Godfather of Gonzo, whose 1989 On The Prowl series broke the barrier between porn fantasy and everyday reality (and notoriously inspired that scene in Boogie Nights).

Or they may know him from his Walking Toilet Bowl series of scat films. Or his work with John Stagliano on the Buttman series. Or with Ed Powers on the Dirty Debutantes series. Or even as Devious Old Gillis.

Often cited as the greatest actor in porn, frequently reviled as being too extreme or too hardcore, Gillis embodies many of the more emotive aspects of male sexuality: charm and seduction, humour and intelligence, fearlessness and lust, disgust and rage. His range is elastic, his performances are visceral. He effortlessly conveys gravitas and ease onscreen.

In reading through all this material, the picture that emerges is honestly one of a smart guy who was free of inhibition and, simply put, extremely interested in sex (or as Vanessa Del Rio put it, “he was wild and very horny”).

Director Shaun Costello:

“He was the most sexually uninhibited person I’ve ever known, but in all other parts of his life, he was possibly the most inhibited guy on the planet. He didn’t drink. He didn’t do drugs. His vices were Gitane cigarettes, and gambling. Other that his personal sexual depravity, he was really quite straight. He was certainly not the usual one dimensional type that you find in the porno business…(he) had a bit more animal appeal. Women loved Jamie, and he had his way with them.”

Former lover/porn star Serena:

“I lived with Jamie Gillis for two years. It was very hot. We were in lust. We’d go by train across country because he wouldn’t fly. We were very in demand as a couple, so we’d be going back and forth all the time. We’d rent a car with a bed, then we’d go stalking pretty girls in coach and drag them back to our bedroom. And we’d be doing that for three and a half days. It’s pretty hard to say no to Jamie. He’s very much into S&M and he could go either way. So he’d either give them spankings and then he’d beg them to let him cum on their high heels. He’d always do something strange. But he was interesting. I learned a lot about the dark side with him. Gillis himself:

The sexual scene or the scene of the film, so…I want it to work, so usually that means that you want the girl to get off or be into it. And usually I am into it. I’m very sexual, I guess, so it’s not that hard. I like to fuck.”

Part of my motivation for doing a post on Jamie Gillis came from the discovery that some materials were available online now that I hadn’t been aware of before. Gillis has been more forthcoming about his past than had previously been the case, and indeed has a new credit this year, appearing in a documentary about Jack Wrangler, the iconic 1970s gay pornstar (who also appeared in straight porn).

We have numerous mutual friends and he has always been a fun guy to be around.

When male talent fails in a scene it costs the production companies a lot of money i.e. you still have the female talent, make-up artist, location, production assistants etc. That is why most companies like to find solid, reliable guys they use over and over. For example we use Ralph Long and Eric John every single week in live shows where they each have become the main character.

When I saw Domenic on the night on the 10th I was engaged in a business conversation with a friend. Domenic came up to my friend and told him he had, “a bigger than dick than Whitezilla” and that he would make my friend a lot of money if he hired him. (My friend owns the largest adult talent agency in Los Angeles).

My friend very politely smiled and told him “OK.” We went back to our conversation and Domenic became agitated by the perceived lack of attention my friend gave him. Domenic went to say how he stuck up for my friend all the time. Again my friend politely thanked him and we went to back our conversation.

About half an hour later Domenic approached me and screamed at me that Jim Powers and I were, “mother fuckers and trying to black list him”. I told him to calm down, that I thought he was good guy, Jim picks the guys and since he had failed for Jim before there was nothing I could do. Domenic then threw a punch at me, I tried to move my head out of the way and he hit me right behind my left ear. The punch knocked me to the ground; I got up and was I grabbed several security staff.

I was shocked by Domenic’s actions since I had always been very friendly with him. Security called LAPD. LAPD asked me what happened and I gave them the details of the above story. I wish Domenic the best in his future endeavors, but taking out his frustration on me is not acceptable behavior. I hope he learns from his mistake and will not repeat it.

HOLLYWOOD, CA — The Huxtables really must be white because they were shut out of the victory circle during the 2nd annual Urban X Awards which took place Sunday night at Boulevard 3 in Hollywood.

The promising award show which honors ethnic stars and movies in the Black, Asian and Latin genres was abuzz with fun-loving activity all night long but X-Play’s Not the Cosbys XXX received zero trophies which prompted plans for more black and interracial sex comedies from the movie’s director Will Ryder who has created some of porn’s biggest blockbusting titles such as Not the Bradys XXX, Not Bewitched XXX, the upcoming Not Married with Children XXX and just in time for football season Not Monday Night Football XXX.

“I’m not surprised that we didn’t hear our name called from the stage because I don’t think we were nominated for anything,” Rxyder said after being asked if he or the movie’s cast members were hurt by the cold shoulder their movie received from the Urban X organizers. “It would have been a wonderful surprise and total honor if we had won something without being nominated,” he said.

Many are calling Not the Cosbys XXX the greatest porn-parody of all time and possibly the most expensive interracial sex movie ever created but many of the movie’s black actors spotted in attendance at the Boulevard 3 Nightclub partying the night away didn’t seem to notice that their blockbusting parody was left off the dance card line-up.

Sorry for the delay, my man, but when I checked into this joint, they wouldn’t let me bring in my planner, with all my numbers. So I hope that when these few words reach you, that they will find you in your usual good spirits, out and about with a fine-looking fox. I’m sorry to say that things could be better for me at the moment, as the daily drag of the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles tends to take the fun and excitement part of life out of the equation. But I’m keeping my spirits up, because I know that I am NOT a criminal. I am a VICTIM of an ongoing criminal act. And through my suffering, others may be saved from the same sad fate.

Despite my conviction in Tampa, which is the real obscenity, not a single person had complained about my movies or websites beforehand. My trial was a sham to showcase the Bush Administration’s shameless strategy to suppress the adult entertainment industry, based upon the immoral principles promoted by Evangelical Christians, when they’re not actively eluding detection for their own illegal activities.

So I’m stoked to be going to present my case for appeal before the 11th Circuit Court with the help of my attorney, the 1st Amendment champion H. Louis Sirkin, in late October. We have some powerfully potent arguments for complete vindication of the baseless convictions, and are even attacking the very obscenity law itself, and hope to send it to the trash-heap of legal history once and for all where it belongs!

In the mean time, I’m making the most of what little I have up here, and my time away from family, friends, and career to improve myself and expand my already impressive encyclopedic knowledge. To that end, I’ve been not only reading but writing as well, and have been working out quite often, so I look and feel better than I have in years. I’m also taking this opportunity to kick the nasty habits of smoking and drinking, both of which are available here, which was something I was unable to do on the outside. Most importantly, I like to drive my Corvette real fucking fast, and you can’t do that nowadays after you’ve been drinking.

I’m currently incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center, which is more like a jail than a federal prison. It’s primarily a temporary holding facility for pre-trial and pre-sentence inmates of the nearby federal courtrooms. But even in the shittiest of shitholes, they still need worker bees to keep the place running. That’s where my section comes in . We’re the designated care workers, and if you think that slavery is dead in America, think again. We start at 12 cents and hour for back-breaking work, and we’re rousted out of bed to do it at 5AM. Not that I mind getting up early, but to weld shut windows so other even less-fortunate inmates can’t look at the outside work is work beneath contempt.

I hope to be transferred down to Terminal Island, next to Long Beach, which is a way better facility than this one. They have a huge outside yard to walk around and exercise on, as well as a gym, library, and even a music room. I’ll keep you posted on that one.

That’s all for now my friend. I hope that you and yours are weathering the economic collapse of corporate America as best you can, and keeping a positive attitude about it, even though you’re not likely to see any benefit whatsoever from the billions being doled-out to the billionaires. At least you’ve got much better access to all the bitchin’ babes in the porn industry. Take it sleazy, Ray!

From SFGate.com – The Mitchell Brothers family, which pushed all things X-rated into San Francisco’s social consciousness and was later rocked by fratricide, has recorded a tragic new chapter with the arrest of the son of one of the porn kings on charges of bludgeoning to death the mother of his young daughter.

James Raphael Mitchell of Pittsburg, the 27-year-old son of Jim Mitchell, allegedly beat Danielle Keller to death with a baseball bat Sunday evening at the home she shared with her mother in Novato, then fled with the couple’s daughter – who turned 1 year old that day.

With police around the state hunting for him, Mitchell was arrested just before midnight after he pulled off Interstate 80 in Citrus Heights (Sacramento County). His daughter, Samantha Mitchell, was unharmed.

Keller, 29, was found dead in her backyard just before 7 p.m. Sunday. A blood-soaked bat was found nearby, police said.

In addition to being Samantha’s birthday, Sunday was the second anniversary of the death of Jim Mitchell, who served prison time for killing his brother and longtime business partner, Artie Mitchell.

“It’s kind of madness here,” said Terence Hallinan, the former San Francisco district attorney who knew Jim Mitchell and is representing his son. “Nothing really makes sense.”

Trying to make a break

Keller’s mother, Claudia Stevens, described her daughter as a dedicated mother who had decided to make a clean break from James Mitchell after two years of what she called abusive behavior.

“Thank God they caught him so he can be held accountable,” Stevens said.

Mitchell was booked on suspicion of murder, child abduction and other charges. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. today in Marin County Superior Court.

Keller met Mitchell at a San Francisco nightclub, Stevens said, and they quickly became a couple. Within a few months, Keller was pregnant.

TEHRAN, IRAN — A group of adult entertainment actors, most of them “beautiful young women,” face the death penalty under Islamic law after being arrested Wednesday during a police raid on an underground pornography operation.

The raid, carried out at house in a middle-class Tehran suburb, was aimed at a group of amateurs who had been making hardcore films and distributing them on the black market, the pro-reformist website Fararu.com reported.

Traditionally, Iranian police have been loath to acknowledge porn-related arrests. However, in recent years a black market for porn has grown in the country, and police have engaged in an increasing number of high-profile “morality” raids on events where alcohol was served and orgies were alleged to have occurred. Authorities typically denounce the events as “satanist.”
